Abigail’s year in Kansas

Hi everyone!

My name is Abigail Ernstzen and I spent my exchange year in Olathe, Kansas.

When I started school I was nervous that I won’t find any friends but I got over that thought and made some very good friends by not being scared and shy. First semester was my favorite!

I had so many cool classes such as painting, ASL (American Sign Language) or choir. I joined a sport called Cross Country and I got into my school musical “The Music Man”. I had so much fun dancing and singing on the stage with many lights and camera’s! In the beginning of the year I signed up for international club at my school and I was one of 6 exchange students in this club.

One of my favorite memories is spirit week before Homecoming and Homecoming itself. It’s a school dance in the fall. I also enjoyed all the football games and other sport events. I spent my Christmas in Florida with my host family, the weather was wonderful. My favorite volunteering activity was taking care of puppies and kittens at a pet hospital. I visited many states and learned about the culture and language. I finished my first semester with a smile on my face :)

In winter I joined the basketball team and my teammates were so nice. Classes changed in the second semester, that means I met more new people. My favorite class in the other half of the year was definitely baking, we had so much fun making cupcakes and muffins.

School was a big part of my exchange year. I met many wonderful people and I know I’ll stay in touch with them for a long time. My senior year got cut, because of the virus but that doesn’t mean that everything ended. It was the best year of my life!
