An exchange year in Omaha
I remember the day I got my placement. I was nervous and excited at the same time. I was really surprised at the size of Omaha. The population there is around one million.
The school I went to was enormous, almost 3 thousand students. First day was stressful but soon I figured there is nothing to be afraid of. After I joined cross country I made many friendships and felt like I was part of the team. Being able to participate in various competition in the fall was an experience that taught me to not give up and run through the finish line.
Joining business program and biology program broadened my horizons and kept me engaged in various events, that took place at the local college. Fall, was a very active time for me. Going to football games was one of my favourite. The atmosphere there and cheering for your team is something you can not describe in words. Another event that took place this time was Homecoming, which I have to say will be unforgettable. Especially, the spirit week before it. Seeing the whole school participate was a confirmation on how important is that evet for them. At the end of the session, I had a chance to interview my principal, who quickly become for me a role model as a leader.
One of my favourite experience was International Education Week, that completely changed my point of view about my culture but also other cultures. I had a chance to share it with people from English Learners Department which are students move to United States and their first language is Spanish or other. It was eye-opening for me because they wanted to share their culture with me and also do the presentation about their own traditions
During winter, I focused more on volunteering at the local center for girls, where I helped them with homework and after school activities. Before Christmas, I got to volunteer at different events organized by local Children Museum with friends from my high school. For Christmas break I went on a road trip to Florida with my host family. I got to see different states on our way down.
The exchange year was a life changing experience that helped me grow as a person. My host family and friends made this year unforgettable!
